When you ice your spine, it helps to reduce the inflammation which helps with the overall healing process.

An inflamed and swollen disc can potentially irritate the nearby spinal cord or nerve roots, causing pain. When you ice your spine, it helps to reduce the inflammation which helps with the overall healing process. Chronic inflammation causes an acidic environment. The body tries to neutralize it by sending calcium (which is alkaline).  As a result of this excess calcium, bone spurs form on the vertebrae, causing early degeneration (aka arthritis).
